Biochar is not a practice estimated in either COMET-Farm or COMET-Planner. . The COMET-Tools were developed in parallel with and as a function of what we call the USDA Blue Book methods document. For practices to be included in the COMET-Farm, and subsequently generate a COMET report showing those emissions reductions or carbon sequestered, the methods must be outlined in this document prior to being included in the tool. Because there is no methodology for GHG emissions on biochar application included in the USDA Methods document, it is not included in the tool.
For practices to be included in COMET-Planner, such as biochar application, there must be an NRCS Conservation Practice Standard defining the practice AND supporting data on that practice actually being implemented in a given region (state/county).
